Acute Otitis Media

When to see:

 

Same Day – if not responded to first line tx

 

 

Investigations to request:

 

FBC, UE, CRP

​

Potential Risks:

Meningitis

Facial Palsy

Purulent Labrynthitis

Ear Drum Rupture 

Mastoiditis

Intracranial Infection

Treatment

Paracetamol, Ibuprofen (consider opiates for severe pain)

 

 

Oral abx (if no previous tx) e.g amoxicillin or co-amoxiclav

 

 

IV abx if systemically unwell

 

 

Keep NBM  till Snr review if systemically unwell or suspected complications – pt may need emergency myringotomy and grommet
